Our journey took root in February 2025 as part of the Griot in Me Project, supported by the Association of Black Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Ottawa-Gatineau.

The Lukasa Library was brought to life by a dedicated group of four local Grade 10 students: Rakeb Philipos, Najwa Adem, Nyla King, and Violet Lungo.

Guided by their caretaker, Dr. Clyde Ledbetter Jr.—a scholar from Cheyney and Virginia Commonwealth Universities—the team worked to build a sanctuary for knowledge. During his time in Ottawa, Dr. Ledbetter realized a vital vision: safeguarding our rich culture and heritage for the youth of tomorrow.
